WALKING: (10-15 minutes off the Trail)  There are two points where you can leave the Trail to reach us:

OS Grid Ref:  628666

From the East—Do not follow the obvious way off the Trail into Gilsland village, but rather walk on past Milecastle 48, cross the Railway line (for a 2nd time) , past the School and onto the road.  Turn right and * *  follow the road towards Gilsland but do not go into the village.  Instead stay on the road as it swings left, +++past an old garage, across the River Irthing and then turn left onto the road signed  B6318 BIRDOSWALD. Brookside Villa is well signed and is the 1st house on the left just after crossing Red Beck.

From the West— walk on from Birdoswald, past Willowford and onto the road turn left,  and follow from * *

(if you do go into Gilsland village, with the Post Office on your left , walk on to the Bridge Inn T-junction , turn right signed Birdoswald, then from +++)

OR

From East or West leave the Trail at BIRDOSWALD. Walk down the road just past the car park and go through the kissing gate on your right: footpath to “The Hill”.  Cross the field diagonally in a North Easterly direction, down the steps into a narrow gorge, cross the footbridge, continue up and across the field bearing right diagonally (north easterly)  towards a dry stone wall and out onto the road (B6318).  Turn right and follow the road for c.700m.  Brookside Villa is well signed on the right just before the road crosses Red Beck.

DRIVING:

ON the A69 about midway between Brampton and Haltwhistle.   Beware! There are a number of turns signposted Gilsland.  Be sure to take the turn signed DENTON, GILSLAND 2 miles, SPADEADAM and a brown tourist sign for BIRDOSWALD.  Cross the railway at a level crossing.  At the village outskirts follow the road as it swings to the left, past a yellow truck garage, cross bridge over the River Irthing.  Take 1st left signed Birdoswald. Brookside Villa is well signed and is the 1st house on the left. Pull onto small guest parking area just below the house.
