Our home is a spacious Victorian stone-built villa on the western outskirts of Gilsland village straddling Cumbria and Northumberland. Gilsland sits at the Western edge of the remote and beautiful Northumberland National Park and on to the breathtaking beaches of the Northumberland coast.

Brookside Villa Bed and Breakfast is less than a half-mile from Hadrian’s Wall between Birdoswald Fort and Willowford, and is close to other historical sites, Housesteads, Vindolanda and Roman Army Museum, Lanercost Priory, We are at the very heart of Hadrian’s Wall Country, - check out local landscapes - we’re just off the line of Hadrian’s Wall Trail and on the Route 72 Hadrian’s Cycleway, You can find us on this MAP. TOURING?

Driving east into Northumberland, we are 45 minutes from the vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne — via the market town of Hexham and historical Corbridge. An hour or so will get you to the awesome Northumberland Coast. Closer still is Kielder Water and forest. Going west into Cumbria, , Carlisle is 25 minutes away via Brampton, The Solway Firth and Dumfries and Galloway are within reach, and we are about an hour’s drive from Cumbria’s Lake District.

WALKING?

Gilsland is at the heart of Hadrians Wall Country. You can walk the “Best Of” Hadrian’s Wall using us as your base, and the AD122 Hadrian’s Wall shuttle bus which passes the gate every 2 hours, 7 days a week. We’re also happy to collect and drop you off to enable you to walk linear sections of Hadrian’s Wall Trail We also have details and maps of a number of really good circular walks (some from the door) which take in the best of the Northumbrian countryside and of Hadrian’s Wall and Roman Forts and remains.

If you want the best of both Northumberland, and Cumbria’s Lake District, we are only one hour’s drive to some superb and less-crowded walks in the Northern Lakes—see “Blencathra”. We’re happy to lend you our OS maps and Wainwright guides.

CYCLING?

We offer B&B on the line of Route 72 Hadrians Cycle Way— and are within easy reach of The Reivers Way—Route 10. We also have maps and details of 5 do-in-a-day-rides within the area, along with details of Cycle Hire and Repair shops. We have a car bike-rack, so can get help with transport in emergencies. And of course we have secure bike storage.

FISHING?

We have some of the best Salmon and Trout fishing in England on the Rivers Irthing, Eden and the South Tyne. You can also fish for Brown and Rainbow Trout at New Mills Fish Farm Lake— you can catch your fish and I’ll cook it for your dinner! Kids “done” the Romans? - take the children along for a great day or half-day out and to learn the new skill of fly-fishing.
