The Environment  We know that we could probably do (or not do) more to be “greener” and be more ethical consumers.  But this is what we try to do:

We buy local, fair-trade, free-range and organic produce as far as practically possible.   For example, we use butchers in Brampton and in Haltwhistle who ensure that meat is sourced from known farms within 15 miles of the shop; we buy local eggs, and buy organic cheese and lamb from Slack House farm ½ mile up the road.   We try to source seasonal fruit and vegetables locally, though this is not always feasible – either in terms of supply, or cost to you.

We use on-line shopping for our household staples and organise it so we have one plastic-bag-free delivery every 2 weeks – thus saving at least three 50 mile car trips to our nearest supermarket.

Most of our guests stay only one night so, where possible we launder your towels at 30^0.   We line-dry - weather permitting! - and avoid the tumble-dryer though this means your towels may not appear very fluffy.  We NEVER use chemical fabric softeners.  We use a laundry service for linens with a weekly pick up/collection from many B&Bs along our section of the Trail.

Buying a Packed Lunch?   We would prefer to REFIL your own water bottles but will, of course, supply you with a bottle of water if you need it – please consider reusing this bottle for the rest of your trip!   We use paper bags, not plastic wrap or aluminium foil.

We do not use bin-liners in the bedroom waste bins – I wash the bins each day as part of our cleaning routine.   We recycle paper and plastic waste as far as possible.

We want you to be warm and comfortable, but we do try to avoid over-heating public areas or bedrooms.  But you’ll find additional heating in your room if you feel it’s a little cool.  We also try to strike a balance between good lighting, and using energy-saving bulbs – we hope we have that right for you.
